1) The
1st form Mechanical Engineering Technology student should be able to identify
personal protective clothing used in the workshop with a 100% accuracy
2) The
1st form Mechanical Engineering Technology student should be able to group each
pictures provided under the heading (Fire/Fire Extinguisher, General Safety,
Protective Clothing) with a 90% accuracy.
3) The
1st form Mechanical Engineering Technology student should be able to explain
the importance of safety in the workshop within 30 seconds with a 100%
accuracy.
Select Media, Materials
MEDIA- Computer (Microsoft Word), Speakers, Projectors
MATERIALS- none-projective interactive media (Health and Safety Trivia
Board Game), cue cards, pictures, Game Icons
Utilize Media, Materials, and
Methods
The computer will be used to show video on the overhead projector
Speakers
With the aid of speakers the
students will be able to hear the clip clearly. The speakers will enhance their
learning experience
Projectors would be used to allow the students to view a video clip
played on Microsoft Word on safety in the workshop.
The Health and Safety Trivia Board
Game will be used to create competitive
learning allowing the students to see there progression against the other
teams.
Cue Cards consist of
questions that will be asked by the teacher that students would have to
answer.
Pictures will be used
where students would have to group each picture under the appropriate
heading.
Game Icons will be
issued to each player to move along the footprints on the board once questions
are answered correctly.
Introduction
Students will be separated into
groups of four and be engaged in a Health and Safety Board game. Instructions
and rules of the game will be said. Students would be told they would be
watching a short video on safety and fire.
Require Learner Participation
Students will be placed into groups
where they will be competing against each other as a team. They would then be
shown a video of a hazardous workshop an also how to use a fire extinguisher
and types of fire. Students will be required to answer
questions individually to advance in the game and work as a team to explain the
reason for their answers. Each team will then discuss among themselves
in the bonus round to group pieces of pictures under there appropriate heading.
Evaluate Student
Students had to answer
questions individually asked by the teacher and also to solve a puzzle in the
final round as a group. Once the question was answered correctly the students
moved one step forward on the Health and Safety board game. Questions answered
would allow the teacher to know if students understand the topic and if
objectives were successful.
Teachers’ Reflection
Overall the game was successful. The
students were very excited to participate, they were very competitive and
worked hard to ensure their team was victorious. They had a good understanding
of protective clothing and general safety, however three out of 16 of the
students showed a few difficulty in understanding fire safety, therefore some
revision would be done next class.
Portfolio Reflection
Portfolio piece #2 was aimed at designing a teaching tool using Microsoft Word. Myself and fellow educator Mrs. Mckinze came up with a Health and Safety Trivia Game. This Health and Safety Trivia will serve as a wonderful tool to promote healthy competition, team work and to strengthen and support the learning process.
In Mechanical engineering as well as other technical vocational subjects, Health and Safety is a key topic. This is an essential topic to be taught yet many young students do not appreciate nor value the importance of these health and safety lessons, because they are mostly focused on immediately getting into the hands on side of things, thus they generally see health and Safety a boring topic. However, with this tool we can generate interest and excitement into our lesson. When using the game we can test and review several areas through question and answer. Students make progress by their ability to answer questions of varying difficulties to advance forward and win the game. This trivia game takes on the form of a race, there are four teams and the team who can get all their members or the most of their team to the finish line will win. It is possible to check each students' success by the number of questions he/she can successfully answer.
Time and financial constrains posed the first set of challenges for this piece. The presentation and design of this piece would have greatly benefited if more time and finance was given to its creation. The design was changed some three times because of time and finance. After settling on our design we still had to agree on how the game will work, and the position which the game would be played in. The original idea was for the game to be mounted on the wall but because of mounting issue with the game pieces, we had to settle for a flat board game.
My recommendations for improvement would be to first try to have the game mounted vertically so that the game could be played with a game show atmosphere. It would also be nice to increase the size of the actual piece, to give a chance for more questions to be asked to each student.
